“Enlighten, O God of compassion, the hearts of your children, sanctified by penance, and in your kindness grant those you stir to a sense of devotion a gracious hearing when they cry out to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”
Jesus set us free. In John 8 Jesus continues his dialogue with the Pharisees, explaining to them how they have been enslaved to their sin. Everyone who sins is a slave. The slave imagery is an important one to the Hebrew people. Their identity is a people set free from slavery, delivered by God from Pharaoh. Here, Jesus is telling them they are still slaves no matter what their tax return says.
We are all slaves to something. Sin, possessions, materialism, addiction, and bad relationships all have a way of capturing us and taking us hostage. Our Father loves us so much He can’t bear to see us enslaved. He offers us freedom. The Son offers us the chance to become His brothers and sisters. Let us live in this freedom, let us accept our status as free men and women, and let us pray to have room for His word..
