“Grant, we pray, almighty God, that, though in our weakness we fail, we may be revived through the Passion of your Only Begotten Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”
In John 12:1-11, Jesus is back at Lazarus’ house. He had already raised this man from the dead, and as you might imagine Lazarus’ family threw Jesus a dinner party. Mary, Lazarus’ sister took a jar of perfume and began pouring it on Jesus’ feet, wiping it with her own hair. When Judas scoffed at the waste of money this represented, Jesus predicted His own death. He said she was anointing Him for His burial.
Here Jesus reminds His disciples what Messiah means. He is the fulfillment of the prophesies in Isaiah about God’s suffering servant. He has to die, and He knows the time is near. Imagine the human heart of Christ, knowing what was only days away. Imagine Him, as his friend rubbed her hair on His feet, knowing she was anointing Him for a brutal death.
