My refuge is God

During last weeks sermon we talked about some of the effects of losing sight of our purpose.  When we forget who God has made us to be, we can do one of three things:

  1. End it all
  2. Sedate ourselves with coping mechanisms
  3. Reestablish the connection to our Creator

As a church, we obviously want to fight for #3. Here are some scriptures that John used is his sermon that can help us fight for a connection with our Heavenly Father:

Cry out to God

Psalm 61:1-3  Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.

Psalm 62:5-7  For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Psalm 63:1-4  O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.

Entrust yourself to the Sovereignty & The Goodness of God

1 Chronicles 29:11-13  Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.

Romans 8:28-29   And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Prepare to Suffer

1 Peter 4:19  Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

1 Peter 1:13  Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
