50 Shades of

Last week I was listening to the radio and I heard about a burlesque show coming to Dallas. The advertisers were pushing it for Valentine's Day and asked people come in order to "keep Dallas sexy". WTH? (what the heaven?)

Earlier that week Kasey and I began dialoguing about the upcoming movie, 50 Shades of Grey. She wanted me to speak out about it at church. And I honestly did not want to share because of fear.

Being married and enjoying sex is amazing. And yet all of the sexuality we are bombarded with in the world is still alluring to me in spite of my marriage. When it comes to this movie, A part of me wants to know what was so "sexy" about it. I had the thought, "How can I speak out when I have my own issues?"

Then I had another thought that told me I should actually know the details of the book so that I could better pastor our people and be relevant to the times (that one was clever, and stupid - see Psalm 101:3 & Philippians 4:8). How can I condemn something I actually would not mind "accidentally" seeing?

My thoughts continued... "What if I fall? What if I speak out about the ills of this movie and then later I sin in such a way I disqualify myself? Or ruin my family?" Lots of fear came up in me regarding speaking up about this movie.

As I continued to process in my mind, I began to notice some unusually negative thoughts. "You are a liar, a hypocrite! You are no different than anyone else! What if they really knew all the things you've done?"

In the middle of all of these thoughts I heard that phrase in the commercial, "Keep Dallas sexy." In that moment, I immediately had clarity.

"Who is trying to keep Dallas sexy? Who inspired the writing of 50 Shades? (I don't know her name and don't want to look it up. Thanks X-WatchCovenant Eyes, and the Holy Ghost). Who is bombarding me and the rest of America with all of this sexuality?"

In a moment I realized it was not the author of the book, the producers of the burlesque show or anyone else. The person driving this hyper, oversexualization of our culture is Satan. The book should be called 50 Shades of Satan. Catchy, huh? The source of the book's derivation is none other than the Father of Lies, the Lord of the Flies, the roaring lion looking to steal, kill and destroy - Satan himself.

Rather harsh, wouldn't you say? Imagine how well this would go over on all the radio stations, TV shows and entertainment news stations:

Congenial Host:  Pastor Bower, what do you think about this provocative new book?

Pastor Bower:  Thank you for your questions. I actually wrote a letter I would like to read. It goes like this:

Dear Author of 50 Shades - Satan inspired your violent book. It is demonic. It is satanic. You are unleashing hell in hundreds of millions of people across the world. They don't even know it. You are opening the door to violence, heartbreak, death and destruction. Can you imagine all of the kids that accidentally stumbled upon your book? All the little boys who's first foray into sexuality is seeing this movie on their parents TV? Not only is that shameful and unfortunate for you, but Jesus says he would rather you drown yourself than cause any of His little ones to stumble (Matthew 18:6).

Oprah's booking agent cancels Pastor John's invitation to join her book club.

Here's the deal. IF we believe the Bible is true and inspired, IF we believe Jesus was real and is coming back and never lies, THEN the above comments are spot on:

2 Corinthians 4:4

Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don't understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

Ephesians 2:1-4

Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

Psalm 119:9

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to Your Word.

The main thing I want to say to our Normandy Family is that Satan is real and he hates you. He will get into your homes anyway he can. He sucks. I am not kidding. He is out to destroy every image bearer he can. So be aware. Put on the armor of God. Don't set filth before your eyes (even if it is alluring). We have a worthy King to fight for and with. He is holy. He will not let us fall. He is faithful.
